Introduction: As noted earlier, the OSPCA has identified Humane
Education as a priority. The Etobicoke Humane Society supports this
emphasis, and is actively involved in the community-wide promotion
of Humane Education using a variety of communication tools.
Animal Abuse Often Leads To People Abuse
Many studies have proven the link between animal abuse and other
forms of violence. Many individuals involved in violent crimes against
human beings also have a history of childhood animal abuse.
Humane Education Can Help Prevent Violence - Studies show that
children usually relate easily to animals. Learning to be patient
with, and to show compassion for animals, not only helps the animals,
but teaches young people vital lessons and tools that they can use
in their relationships with people.
Humane Education Teaches Responsibility - When children learn the
proper care of a pet, how all life is inter-related, how animals
affect our environment, and how we affect animals, children learn
the importance of their role in the natural world; they begin to
develop a perspective on their individual place in that world, and
how they can make a difference for the better.
The Etobicoke Humane Society's Humane Education program includes
visiting schools and helping to educate the students about proper
animal care. As well, there are various facts sheets available at
the center on Humane Education.
